Search engines have become an integral part of our online lives, but many people don’t know how they started. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the first ones and their impact on the internet. Stay tuned for more!
The first search engine was actually developed by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The original purpose was to help CERN physicists share information and research. It was called ALIWEB and was launched in 1990. ALIWEB allowed users to submit their own websites to be indexed, which made it different from later search engines that relied on web crawlers to discover new websites. However, ALIWEB was not very popular and only had a few hundred users.
In 1993, another early search engine called Archie was launched. Archie allowed users to search for files that were stored on FTP servers. It was also not very popular, but it did show that there was interest in online search tools.
In 1994, the first web browser was released, and shortly thereafter, the first major search engine, Yahoo!, Was launched. Yahoo! quickly became the most popular one and remained so until Google came onto the scene in the late 1990s. Since then, Google has become the dominant player in this now extremely popular market.
