The very first website made was created by a man named Tim Berners-Lee, who created it in 1990 as a way to share information with other scientists. The website was simple and only contained text, but it was a revolutionary idea at the time. Today, there are over 1 billion websites on the internet, and they come in all shapes and sizes. You can find websites for businesses, charities, personal blogs, and just about anything else you can think of. It’s hard to imagine a world without the internet. Though it wasn’t so long ago that the web was nothing more than a dream. Thanks to Tim Berners-Lee, we now have a place where we can share information with anyone in the world.
About The Man
Tim Berners-Lee is a British computer scientist credited with inventing the World Wide Web. He was born in London in 1955, and his parents were early computer pioneers who worked on one of the first computers in the UK. Berners-Lee studied physics at Oxford University, and it was there that he first became interested in computers. After graduation, he began working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. While working at CERN, Berners-Lee came up with the idea for the World Wide Web. In 1989, he wrote a paper entitled “Information Management: A Proposal”. This was an outlined vision for a global system of interconnected hypertext documents. He then designed and built the first web server and browser, and the World Wide Web went live to the public in 1991.
These days, Berners-Lee is an important advocate for open standards and open-source software. He is currently director of the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C, which is responsible for developing web standards.
